North Texas Defeats Troy 4-2 To Advance To Semifinals

DENTON, Texas (4/18/09) - The Mean Green tennis team won a tough battle against the Troy Trojans 4-2 on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the 2009 SBC Tournament from the Waranch Tennis Complex in Denton.

"I'm proud of how we competed showing a lot of courage and heart," said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama. "It was an exciting match with a lot of emotion and made for a great atmosphere. Our opponent Troy played hard and deserves a lot of credit as well."

The doubles point proved valuable again for the fourth-seeded Mean Green as the squad took an early 1-0 advantage over the fifth-seeded Trojans. The No. 1 doubles team of Amy Joubert / Madura Ranganathan grabbed the first match 8-3 over Troy's Rawia Elsisi and Leonie Guijt. From the third spot, freshmen Paula Dinuta and Irina Paraschiv clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win against Annabelle Bares and Gabriella Viega.

The singles were back and forth, but North Texas stepped it up when it counted the most. After NT dropped the first match in singles, Madura Ranganathan looked strong as she won from the No. 2 spot 6-0, 6-4 over Mirte De Bakker of Troy.

With the overall score tied at 2, the Mean Green sealed the deal winning two more in singles. At the fifth position, Narine Kazarova took her match in three sets against Stephanie Vieira 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Freshman Irina Paraschiv then won a hard-fought match from the No. 1 spot versus Rawia Elsisi which included a first set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

This marked the tenth consecutive win for North Texas (17-5, 2-1) this season.

NT plays in the semifinals Sunday morning at 9 A.M. versus No. 1 seed Denver at the Waranch Tennis Complex. DU is currently ranked 34th in the nation.
