DENTON (4/17/04) - The North Texas women’s tennis team (14-9) ended the regular season with a 5-2 win over Arkansas-Little Rock (20-4) on Saturday in a Sun Belt Conference match at Goldfield Tennis Center.
The Mean Green picked up its second consecutive victory and handed the Trojans just their fourth loss of the season. UALR recently dropped out of the national rankings, but was the No. 72 team in the country as of March 30.
The Mean Green finished the regular-season with an 8-3 home record, including three Sun Belt Conference victories.
North Texas won two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Krysta Lee and Katherine Harris won flight one, bringing their record in the top flight to 14-6. Those 14 victories are the most on the team this season and the fourth most in school history. Holly Lee and Megan Schmulbach were responsible for the other doubles win, taking flight three by an 8-4 score.
Krysta Lee, who defeated the 97th ranked player in the nation earlier this week, continued her strong play with a win over Cecelia Poveda in flight one. She improved to 15-15 in the top singles flight and her 15 wins are the ninth most by a No. 1 Mean Green player in the program’s 26-year history.
Kelli Royer and Ingrid Stockinger each won their team-leading 16th match with victories in flights two and six, respectively. Harris won flight three to account for the final NT victory in singles action.
The Mean Green collected its 14th win of the season, tying its most single-season victories in the last 18 seasons. The 2001-02 squad also won 14 matches under current head coach Dawna Prevette. With one victory at the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Championships, the Mean Green can post its highest single-season victory total since the 1986-87 team won 15 matches as well. Two or more victories at the post-season tournament will give North Texas its fourth-best record in school history.
North Texas will begin play in the Sun Belt Conference Championships on April 23 in Mobile, Alabama. The Mean Green has won four of its last six matches heading into the tournament.
