Bardabush Named April 14 C-USA Player of the Week
Senior Earns Conference Recognition for Undefeated Run
CONFERENCE USA RELEASE
IRVING -- Fewer than 48 hours after concluding her Senior Day with a win, Kseniya Bardabush earned her first-career Conference USA Player of the Week award. It is the first time in her career she has achieved this honor.
The senior from Lutsk, Ukraine defeated South Alabama sophomore Laura Valkova 6-2, 7-6 (1) on Sunday to earn a point for the Mean Green en route to the team's 4-2 victory over the Jaguars. Coming into the match, Valkova was 11-5 in singles on the season.
"I think I've played great the last couple of matches and I'm very excited to receive this award," Bardabush said. "I wouldn't be able to achieve it without my coaches and teammates who inspire me every day. I'm looking forward to competing at the conference championship and bringing home a trophy."
Bardabush also played well against UT Arlington junior Elizabeth Thoms, who was 12-2 in singles on the season. She led Thoms by a score of 6-2, 2-5 before being called off the court after the Lady Mavs had clinched the match at 4-0. In her first match of the week, Bardabush was one game away from a three-set win over ULM freshman Amy Olivier before being called off the court after North Texas had clinched the match at 4-2.
With her 32nd-career win at the No. 1 position, she moved into a tie for fourth-most in program history. The senior has not lost a match since April 1 and heads into the Conference USA Tournament with a lot of confidence and momentum in her favor. Head coach Sujay Lama appreciates the hard work she has put in over the course of the season to be playing her best when it matters most.
"Kseniya has been on fire of late and is peaking just at the right time," Lama said. "What's great is that she's still hungry and totally enjoying and embracing each day. She's most deserving of this honor."
The Mean Green begin the C-USA Tournament on Thursday against LA Tech. Bardabush's opponent will most likely be junior Alexandra Starkova, who comes into the match with an 8-6 singles record on the season.
