DENTON, Texas (4/12/08) North Texas’ lone senior, Idalina Franca, helped clinch the doubles point with partner Sammie Moreton as the Mean Green cruised to a 5-2 victory over Arkansas State in the season’s final home match at Waranch Tennis Complex.
Franca finished out the regular season with a team-best 15-5 singles record after a 7-6, 7-6 victory in the No. 3 singles spot. North Texas (12-8) heads into the Sun Belt Tournament with a 5-2 record against conference opponents, its best in eight years in the SBC.
“It was really important for me to win today,” said senior Franca. “Not only because this is my last home match but, my opponent I faced in singles defeated me last year so I wanted to come back and beat her this time.”
After the doubles point the Mean Green picked up quick singles wins in the No. 4 and No. 6 spots. Narine Kazarova won 6-4, 6-2, and Shannon Mackenzie won 6-2, 6-1.
Amy Joubert improved to .500 on the season with a tough fought three set win. The freshman won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, to even her record at 9-9.
North Texas heads to the SBC tournament this Thursday in Monroe, La.
