Mean Green Tennis Wins Third Straight Match

DENTON (4/12/02) The North Texas women’s tennis team (13-9) closed out the home portion of its schedule on Friday with a 6-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin at the North Texas Tennis Courts.

The Mean Green, which played its final two home matches this season at its on-campus facility, saw its best crowd turnout of the season at the match.  North Texas finished 5-3 at home this year.

“I thought we had a great crowd,” said North Texas head coach Dawna Denny.  “It was a good confidence booster and it lets the team know they have people backing them.”

The Mean Green won all three doubles matches and won five-of-six singles matches.  North Texas cruised to the victory as all five singles victories were taken in straight sets and only one set in one match was closer than 6-4.

Catherine Alain (Sr.; Pont Rouge, Quebec) and Ashley Sammis (Fr.; Portland, Oregon) won flights two and six, respectively, giving them back-to-back victories in the Mean Green’s last two matches.  Natalie Clore (Jr.; Harlingen, Texas), competing in flight three, won her fourth straight match and now has a team-best 19 victories.  Sandhya Kanury (Jr.; Hyderabad, India) extended her winning streak to three matches by taking flight one.  Kristin Beedy (Jr.; Spearman, Texas) was able to get back on the winning track, snapping a two-match losing streak with a flight-five victory.

In doubles, Bettina Rettenmaier (Sr.; Camarillo, California) and Alain paired up to win flight one by an 8-6 score.  Benita Bittner (Jr.; Alice Springs, Australia) and Beedy won for the sixth time in their last seven matches virtue of an 8-6 flight-two victory.  Clore and Joosje Bomer (Fr.; Geldrop, Holland) teamed up for the first time this season to claim an 8-2 victory in flight three.

North Texas has now won its last three matches in a row and with 13 victories, the Mean Green has already topped its total from last year and is just one win away from tying its total from the 1999-00 season.  The 14 victories from the 1999-00 season were the most since 1986-87, when North Texas tallied 15 wins to just nine losses.

“We play so many matches and the schedule can be grueling on the players, so every victory is important,” said Denny.  “We’ve been able to put together three consecutive victories and I feel like we’ve built some momentum up heading into Sunday’s match against Houston.”
