Final Weekend Crucial For Mean Green Tennis
Opponents Bring Combined 31-6 Record to Matchups
DENTON -- Simply put, the last weekend for the North Texas tennis team before the Conference USA Tournament begins will be an important one. The Mean Green face two opponents this weekend with a combined 31-6 record, needing both wins to possibly finish at least .500 for the season.
"We have an opportunity to play two quality opponents this weekend," head coach Sujay Lama said. "Our goal is to finish strong and head to the conference tournament on a high note."
First up are the Lady Mavs, who are 11-1 at home so far this season, on April 11 at 2 p.m. UT Arlington boasts a difficult matchup at No. 1 singles, junior Elizabeth Thoms, who has an 11-1 record at the top spot. North Texas will combat with senior Kseniya Bardabush, who recently defeated the No. 42 singles player in the nation, Houston sophomore Despoina Vogasari, on April 5.
Bardabush and senior Franziska Sprinkmeyer will have an emotionally-charged day on Sunday, with South Alabama coming to Denton for an 11 a.m. match on April 12, which will serve as Senior Day for the two ladies. Both have been with the program through a lot over the past four years, including two Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championships.
"Senior day always bittersweet; Kseniya and Franziska have had brilliant careers here," Lama noted. "It would be a great to have the Mean Green Nation come out to recognize them for their last home match."
The Jaguars will bring an 18-1 record to Waranch Tennis Complex. It would be an undefeated 19-0 if not for a 4-1 loss to C-USA opponent Middle Tennessee on April 10 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Because of the questionable weather forecast for Sunday, please be aware that time and location for the match may change.
