DENTON, Texas (4/10/09) - Mean Green tennis closed out its regular season with two more victories on Friday versus Tarleton State 5-2 and Abilene Christian 4-3 at the Waranch Tennis Complex. These outcomes gave North Texas a nine-match win streak and the most wins (16) for a single season since 1984-85. 

"Hats off to Tarleton State and Abilene Christian for the way they played," said NT head coach Sujay Lama. "It was tough for us at times, but we battled through the matches. I was proud that we got the job done and this is something to build on heading into next week's championships."

Both of the Mean Green's opponents on Good Friday were nationally ranked in Division II with Tarleton at No. 16 and the Wildcats of ACU at No. 7.

The Mean Green (16-5, 2-1) won two of three in doubles to receive the point which proved to be the difference against Abilene Christian (20-5, 5-0). Madura Ranganathan and Amy Joubert won from the top spot 8-3 over ACU's Sarah Drummond and Dina Pavlin. In the third position, NT's Irina Paraschiv and Rachel Wilhelm defeated Jaclyn Walker and Lauren White 8-4.

The two schools split the six singles matches. Paraschiv at No. 1 won her match 6-2, 6-4 over Irene Squillaci. Irina was down 3-0 in the second before storming back for the victory. The depth of the Mean Green also showed as Narine Kazarova and Amy Joubert posted wins from the fifth and sixth positions. Kazarova won in straight sets involving a tiebreaker 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) and Joubert played a tough three-setter to earn a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

On a special note, North Texas' Rachel Wilhelm was honored on Senior Day. Wilhelm tallied a 3-0 record for the day, winning one in singles and two in doubles.     

In the morning match versus Tarleton (10-3, 4-2), North Texas took care of business winning all three matches in doubles and taking four of the six in singles. In doubles, the No. 1 team of Joubert and Ranganathan held off a late charge by Natalia Yanes and Melanie Zilles. The NT team was up 7-1 before it became 7-5. Then Joubert and Ranganathan closed the deal to win 8-5.

The Mean Green captured straight set victories in positions two through five for singles against the TexAnns. Catalina Cruz and Chrissie Cooper played a tough first set with Cruz prevailing 6-4. In the second set, Catalina won going away 6-1 to win the match. Joubert looked sharp versus Adriana Jascova as Joubert was the victor 6-1, 6-3. At the four and five spots, Wilhelm claimed her victory in quick fashion over Jade Charlot 6-2, 6-1 and Shannon MacKenzie notched a W 6-1, 6-4 against Melanie Zilles.

The postseason begins next week as North Texas hosts the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Championships on April 16-19 in Denton, Texas.
The Mean Green will most likely be a top four seed as the seedings will be announced in the upcoming days.
