Playing With An Open Mind

March 23, 2017

DENTON — One of the top individual tennis performances so far this spring came from sophomore Minying Liang last Sunday. Facing the No. 17 ranked Kansas Jayhawks, the Mean Green’s No. 5 trailed 5-1 in her match.

With her back against the wall in the first set, Liang showed tremendous fight and came all the way back in the set to send it into a tiebreaker.

This past month, Liang has been one of the most consistent players in the lineup and has won six singles matches this month alone, which is more then she had all of last spring as a freshman.

MeanGreenSports.com caught up with Liang to see what’s been behind her success and to get to know her better.

How were you able to comeback against Kansas and how much confidence has it given you?
Minying: “I just didn’t want to give up. I kept a clear mind and I told myself I didn’t want to lose. I was pretty proud even though I hadn’t been playing well. It’s given me confidence and shown me I can do a lot.”

Why do you think you’ve been so successful?
Minying:
“I’ve opened my mind and thought clearly during matches. I’m not over thinking during them and I don’t worry I just play my game. I go to church every Sunday and it’s really helped clear my mind. I used to think ‘what am I doing wrong or what should I be doing differently’ and I don’t do that anymore.”

What part of your game did you work on the most this past year?
Minying: “Definitely my serve. I wanted to get better at my serve and I improved it a lot. I improved my slice too.”

What’s your favorite part of tennis?
Minying: “Winning.”

Is there a tennis player you emulate your game after?
Minying: “Roger Federer. He of course has a lot of talent but he also doesn’t show any emotion or any facial expressions. You never know if he’s winning or losing. And his slice is amazing. No one can return it.”

Who introduced you to tennis?
Minying: “My dad. He still plays tennis but I can beat him easily.”

Do you have any hobbies other than tennis?
Minying: “I can play guitar, violin and the ukulele. I also like learning new languages. I can speak English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean and I’m learning Japanese.”

What do you want to do after college?
Minying: “I want to own my own business.”

Do you play any other sports?
Minying: “Basketball. My favorite basketball player is Kobe Bryant.”

What’s your favorite TV show?

Minying: “Stranger Things.”

What’s your favorite movie?
Minying: “I don’t have a favorite movie. I don't watch movies twice. I don’t like watching movies more than once.”

What’s your favorite food?
Minying: “I like all Korean food but I also like raw beef. You cut it into small pieces and you can eat it with rice or just by its self.”

What’s something people don’t know about you?
Minying: “I own every Bruno Mars song.”
