DELAND, Fla. (3/18/09) - The North Texas tennis team won its 11th match of the season on Wednesday against the Stetson Hatters 5-2 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Mean Green took the doubles point and followed it up by winning four singles matches to give the Hatters their first home loss of the season.
"The good thing about this team is we have different players step up and be successful," said NT head coach Sujay Lama. "We got the job done in doubles and then played well all-around in singles. This was a total team effort."
North Texas (11-5, 2-1) played in its first road match in almost a month but showed no signs of struggling away from home.
The doubles teams of Amy Joubert/Madura Ranganthan and Catalina Cruz/Narine Kazarova both grabbed wins to receive a point. Joubert and Ranganathan made a comeback to win their match from the No. 1 spot in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-3). Cruz and Kazarova snagged an victory 8-5 versus Shannon Gunning and Natalie Gorham.
Irina Paraschiv, Paula Dinuta, Narine Kazarova, and Amy Joubert all were victorious from their positions in singles.
Dinuta made quick work of her match against Katherine Nowicki from the fourth position 6-2, 6-0.
"Both my forehand and backhand were strong today," said Dinuta. "The first set was a little tough, but things were easier in the second. I was challenged at certain points in the match, but I stayed focused and played my game."
At No. 3, Paraschiv defeated Unnati Purushotham 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) and Kazarova beat Shannon Gunning in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Amy Joubert looked impressive in her match from No. 6 winning 6-3, 6-0 over Jackie Faulk.
Mean Green tennis stays in Florida to battle the Central Florida Golden Knights this Saturday in Orlando.
