DENTON, Texas (3/17/09) - The North Texas tennis squad looks to continue its three-match winning streak on Wednesday against the Stetson Hatters at 2:30 P.M.(CST) in DeLand, Fla.
In its last three matches, the Mean Green (10-5, 2-1) has picked up solid wins at home. On March 7, the team beat UTEP 6-1 and won a tough match over Lamar 4-3 on March 10.
On Saturday, March 14, NT lost the doubles point then won five of six singles matches to defeat the New Mexico State Aggies 5-2. Senior Rachel Wilhelm clinched the win for North Texas with her victory over Natalia Salum Soto 7-5, 6-4.
The Stetson Hatters from the Atlantic Sun are 7-4 this year with a 2-1 record in conference. They are coached by Sasha Schmid who is in her eighth season. The Hatters have three strong players in singles and two good doubles teams.
Their No. 1 singles player, Valentina Galbarini, is 9-2 overall and currently riding a nine-match winning streak. Unnati Purushotham is 7-1 from the three spot and Shannon Gunning has put up a 6-4 mark from the No. 4 and 5 slots. In doubles, Galbarini and Purushotham are 7-3 from No. 1 and the second team of Breanna Atkinson/Katherine Nowicki have posted a 6-5 record.
Stetson lost their first three contests this season including the opener at No. 14 Florida. Since then, the Hatters have won seven of eight matches featuring victories over Stephen F. Austin and the Sun Belt's Florida Atlantic. The Mean Green also beat SFA 7-0 in Denton on February 7.
North Texas and Stetson have met twice in their history with the Hatters winning both affairs. The most recent was in 2006 as SU won 4-3 in DeLand.
