Kononova Takes Second C-USA Weekly Honor
Freshman Has Two Wins Over ITA Ranked Opponents This Year
DENTON — North Texas freshman Maria Kononova has earned her second Conference USA weekly award of the year, the league office announced on Tuesday. It is Kononova’s second honor in the last three weeks, as she won her first weekly accolade on February 23.
Tuesday’s award follows a dominant display from the team’s top freshman less than a week ago. Against New Mexico, Kononova took down No. 115 Andrea LeBlanc by way of a 6-3, 6-2 score. It was her second win over an Intercollegiate Tennis Association top-125 player this year, matchups in which she has accumulated a 2-1 record overall.
“I can’t say I expected to get this award again because I don’t think my results have been as good as I’d like,” Kononova said. “This just shows me that I’m going in the right direction with my practice and training. Since I’m still adjusting to things, I’m happy with how this year is going so far for me.”
A consistent force at the No. 1 spot for the Mean Green, Kononova is 7-8 from the top position on the season and now has a two-match win streak after picking up a 6-2, 6-4 decision against Louisville’s Ariana Rodriguez on Tuesday afternoon.
If one thing is certain, it’s that Kononova has the confidence of the North Texas coaching staff.
“To get production from a freshman at the No. 1 spot is absolutely huge,” Lama said. “She’s given me more than I demanded or expected. Her development and maturity has shown through in a position that’s very hard to fill. It shows how serious she is about getting better as a player.”
