LAS COLINAS, Texas (3/14/09) - After dropping the doubles point, the Mean Green tennis team won five of six singles matches to defeat the New Mexico State Aggies 5-2 on Saturday. Senior Rachel Wilhelm clinched the win for North Texas with her victory over Natalia Salum Soto 7-5, 6-4.
"Once again we faced some obstacles," said NT assistant coach Jeff Maren. "There were tough points in the matches and a few of our best players were not in the lineup, but everyone stepped up and competed very well through adversity."
Positions two through six all won for the Mean Green in singles.
North Texas' Catalina Cruz beat Laura Boguet in a thrilling two-set tiebreaker match 7-6, 7-6 and Paula Dinuta blazed to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Stephanie Eusebe. Narine Kazarova picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win against Aleksa Costa, Amy Joubert got the W versus Isabela Kulaif in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, and Rachel Wilhelm claimed her match from the No. 6 spot.
Wilhelm also won a doubles match with Ashley Akin 8-4 over Laura Boguet and Natalia Salum Soto.
After missing the Lamar match and doubles action today due to injury, freshman Irina Paraschiv played at the one position against NMSU's Sophia Marks. Paraschiv gave Marks a good fight, but came up short 4-6, 3-6.
The Mean Green's current No. 1 singles player, Madura Ranganathan, did not play in singles due to illness. She did get in a doubles match with Amy Joubert versus the No. 6 team in the Central Region, Aleksa Costa and Sophia Marks. The Aggies prevailed in the match 9-7.
This was the second time during the season that North Texas lost the doubles point and came back to win the match. The other was in a 5-2 decision over Middle Tennessee on February 22.
Mean Green tennis (10-5, 2-1) goes back on the road next week as the squad faces the Stetson Hatters on Wednesday, March 18.
