DENTON, Texas (3/12/09) - The New Mexico State Aggies from the WAC face-off against the Mean Green tennis team this Saturday at 3 P.M. The match will be played indoors at the Las Colinas Country Club. North Texas (9-5, 2-1) is going for its tenth win this year as it closes out a five-match homestand.
“This is another opportunity to compete and improve heading down the stretch," said Mean Green head coach Sujay Lama. "I liked how we competed from start to finish in our last match. Now we need to start doing that on a consistent basis. We expect another hard fought battle against a good NMSU team.”
Mean Green tennis is fresh off victories over UTEP and Lamar. Last Saturday, the group won going away against the Texas-El Paso Miners 6-1. NT took the doubles point and won five of six matches in singles including a three-set tiebreak victory for Catalina Cruz.
On Tuesday, the squad gutted out a win over defending Southland Conference champs, Lamar, 4-3. North Texas picked up the crucial doubles point then both sides split the singles matches including the deciding match won by NT's Catalina Cruz.
New Mexico State (5-4, 0-0) has played solid tennis to this point in the season. The Aggies have beaten Weber State, Pacific, UT-Pan American, and two Mountain West schools (Air Force, Colorado State). Two of their four losses have been against ranked teams, UNLV and New Mexico. Another loss was to UT-San Antonio, who the Mean Green defeated 5-2 on February 14.
NMSU's Aleksa Costa and Sophia Marks are the No. 6 doubles team in the ITA Central Region with a record of 4-4 from the one position. Marks is also the team's No. 1 singles player with a 6-3 mark this year. Stephanie Eusebe (5-4 record) is a solid player at the three spot and Paulina Zuniga is 4-0 at No. 6. Eusebe and Isabela Kulaif are 4-2 as the No. 2 doubles team and the duo of Laura Boguet/Natalia Salum Soto have an undefeated record of 4-0.
North Texas is 3-13 all-time versus New Mexico State. In the previous contest, the Mean Green broke an 11-match losing streak winning in Las Cruces 4-3 last year.
