DENTON, Texas (3/10/09) - The North Texas tennis team gutted out a win over a potent Lamar squad 4-3 at the Waranch Tennis Complex on Tuesday. The Mean Green (9-5, 2-1) picked up the crucial doubles point then both sides split the singles matches including the deciding match won by NT's Catalina Cruz.
"I was proud of the players keeping their composure and getting through adversity," said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama. "Everybody battled and showed a lot of fight. Lamar's a tough team and I believe winning this type of match will help us down the line."
After winning a tough three-set match on Saturday, Catalina Cruz found herself in the same position against Lamar's Mariantonieta Gutierrez. Catalina won the first set 6-4, struggled in the second losing 6-1, then pulled out the third 6-3. She also teamed with Narine Kazarova for an 8-6 doubles victory versus Manijee Ashrafi and Salina Aranda from the No. 2 spot.
There were two other singles victories for the Mean Green. Paula Dinuta played strong in her match winning 6-2, 6-0 against Carla Nava and Narine Kazarova won in three sets over Salina Aranda 7-6, 0-6, 6-3.
NT's Ashley Akin played in her first doubles match of the year as she teamed with Rachel Wilhelm as the No. 3 team. The pair were triumphant in their match against Mariaryeni Gutierrez and Manami Kuroda 8-5.
"I felt both nervous and confident at times," said Akin. "But it was a lot of fun playing doubles especially with Rachel who I had great chemistry with on the court."
Madura Ranganathan and Amy Joubert also won their doubles match from the No. 1 position 8-3 over Lamar's Mariantonieta Gutierrez and Carla Nava.
The tennis team's next opponent will be New Mexico State this Saturday at noon in Denton.
