DENTON, Texas (3/7/09) - The Mean Green tennis team won going away against the Texas-El Paso Miners 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Waranch Tennis Complex. North Texas took the doubles point and won five of six matches in singles including a three-set tiebreak victory for Catalina Cruz.
"The team was focused and competed well today," said NT assistant coach Jeff Maren. "There were windy conditions, but the players did not let it affect them. We had good chemistry in doubles and took care of business in singles. Now we need to shift our focus this coming week against more solid competion."
In the final singles match, the Mean Green's Catalina Cruz played the only three-setter of the day winning in a third-set tiebreaker 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8).
"I didn't try to rush anything in my match today," said Cruz. "I focused on each point and stayed calm. In the tiebreaker, I tried to be more aggressive and step my game up."
NT's Madura Ranganathan and Irina Paraschiv were sharp from the one and two positions. Ranganathan won in straight sets over Carolina DeLuca 6-4, 6-2 and Paraschiv was victorious versus Marina DeLuca 6-1, 6-2.
Narine Kazarova and Amy Joubert played well in their matches from the five and six spots. Kazarova defeated Vicky Michaud 6-4, 6-2 and Joubert took care of Carla Murguia 6-2, 6-2.
At the start of the day, the Mean Green won two of three matches to receive the doubles point. Ranganathan and Joubert picked up an 8-4 victory and the team of Cruz and Kazarova won in impressive fashion 8-1.
North Texas improved to 8-5 this season while UTEP dropped to 9-3.
The Mean Green tennis team goes back to work at 3 P.M. on Tuesday, March 10 as the Lamar Cardinals come to Denton.
