NT Tennis Plays Host To UTEP On Saturday

DENTON, Texas (3/5/09) - The Mean Green tennis team welcomes the Texas-El Paso Miners to the Waranch Tennis Center on Saturday at noon. This will be the third of six straight home matches for North Texas who looks to bounce back after two tough losses against nationally-ranked Tulsa and Florida International last weekend.

“We want to get back on track and find our winning ways again," said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama. "We have a chance to do that with four home matches in less than a week. This is a good time to get on a roll and build momentum. UTEP is a solid team and we need everyone to step up and be ready to play their best.”

The Mean Green (7-5, 2-1) is coming off the losses to Tulsa and FIU where the matches were within a few steps of going NT's way.

On Friday, the squad lost 5-2 to the Golden Hurricane with Catalina Cruz and Narine Kazarova picking up singles wins. Two other singles matches had the Mean Green up a set before falling. In the FIU match on Sunday, Madura Ranganathan defeated Mariana Muci who was the No. 58 player in the country. Ranganathan pulled off the upset in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Paula Dinuta snagged the other victory for North Texas against Maria Pazo 7-5, 6-2.

The UTEP Miners from Conference USA bring a 9-2 record to Denton on Saturday. Last weekend, the Miners lost their opener in conference play to the Tulane Green Wave before grabbing a win versus Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The team has four wins over Texas schools and dropped a 4-3 decision at Kansas early in the season. They also hail the 79th ranked doubles team in the country, Martina Trierweiler and Carolina DeLuca. This pair has posted a 7-1 record from the No. 2 spot. The No. 1 doubles team of Weronika Bloczynska and Megan Pritchard boast a 9-1 mark this season. In singles, Bloczynska has played at the one spot tallying a 10-1 record and Marina DeLuca is undefeated (11-0) from the No. 2, 3, and 4 positions.

The Mean Green leads the all-time series 6-4. The previous meeting took place last year in El Paso where UTEP edged NT 4-3.
