Kononova Named C-USA Athlete Of The Week Again
Kononova Honored For Second Time This Month
IRVING — For the second time this month, North Texas tennis sophomore Maria Kononova was named the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.
Kononova had another undefeated week at No. 1 singles and doubles as the Mean Green shut out New Mexico State and Nevada for their first back-to-back 7-0 shutout since 2012. Kononova, the No. 74 ranked ITA player, improved to 2-0 this season against the ITA top 125 as she beat the No. 77 ranked Claudia Herrero Garcia of Nevada on Saturday, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. On Friday, she defeated New Mexico State’s Rimpledeep Kaur in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Kononova has now won nine straight singles matches at No. 1 and improves to 9-1 on the season.
“Maria has embraced the process and understands the importance of preparation,” said Mean Green head coach Sujay Lama. “Her great results are just the icing on the cake.”
At doubles this past week, Kononova and her partner Tamuna Kutubidze remained undefeated at the No. 1 spot this season. The duo won 6-0 over New Mexico State and 6-2 against Nevada. They are 7-0 this season.
This is the fourth time the second year player has won the conference tennis athlete of the week award.
Kononova and her Mean Green teammates will be back in action this week. North Texas hosts Old Dominion at 3 p.m. on Friday and Arizona at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday
