Tennis Senior Catalina Cruz Named Sun Belt Player Of The Week
DENTON, Texas - North Texas tennis senior Catalina Cruz was selected as the Sum Belt Conference's Player of the Week for her efforts in the Mean Green's three matches last week.
Cruz finished the week with a 5-0 mark, including three doubles victories.
Teamed with freshman Barbora Vykydalvoa for doubles, the North Texas duo started the week by triumphing over Tarleton State's Jade Charlot and Evgenyia Prokofeva 8-0 last Wednesday.
The pair then went on to seal the doubles point against both No. 38 Florida International and South Alabama.
Against FIU, Cruz and Vykydalova emerged from a hard fought match against Christine Seredni and Magali Holt victorious by a score of 8-6. Facing South Alabama's Jess Courtnell and Maria Boura, Cruz and Vykydalova hit only a few minor bumps, taking the match 8-4.
Cruz then took on Charlot from Tarleton State again in singles from the No. 3 spot. The senior only lost four games on her way to a 6-1, 6-3, straight sets victory.
On Saturday, Cruz captured the only Mean Green singles point when she defeated FIU's Magali Holt 6-3, 6-2.
North Texas will be back in action March 5 and 6 in Tulsa, Okla., when they meet the No. 42 University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane and the Kansas State Wildcats.
