DENTON, Texas (2/22/08) - The North Texas tennis team travels to Las Cruces, New Mexico Saturday to play New Mexico State. The Mean Green will then hit the court again on Sunday traveling to El Paso to take on the Miners of UTEP.
The Mean Green (4-4) suffered losses to both the Aggies and the Miners in the 2006-07 season in Denton, but will be looking for a measure of revenge after a revamped offseason.
“We are looking forward to playing two teams that beat us handily last year,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “They are both well coached teams that battle hard. We want to have the same aggressive mind set we had in our last match. This is an opportunity to continue to build momentum and confidence.”
North Texas will first face the Aggies (7-2), who are on a four match winning streak, and are 5-1 on their home court. The Mean Green’s Madura Ranganathan and New Mexico State’s Anne Fagegaltier both have a 6-2 singles record this season.
For the first time all season Ranganathan teamed with Catalina Cruz to compete in the No. 1 doubles spot. The duo looks to face No. 1 Aggies doubles Aleksa Costa and Sophia Marks who have 6-2 record this season.
The following day North Texas will play the Miners who also have a match on Saturday against Air Force. UTEP have had all home games so far this season with an overall record of 5-2. In UTEP’s last match they suffered a loss from Colorado State, and their No. 3 doubles team of Amber Brightly and Vicky Michaud scored the only doubles point for the Miners.
The Mean Green next play Saturday February 23, at the NMSU Tennis Center starting at noon, and then pick up again at 11 a.m. Sunday February 24th, at the El Paso Tennis Club.
