Tennis Picks Up Win Against Middle Tennessee, 5-2

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (2/22/09) - The Mean Green tennis team bounced back from a loss on Saturday to defeat the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 5-2 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Sunday. North Texas (7-3, 2-0) dropped the doubles point for the second straight day, but took five of six singles matches to seal the Sun Belt conference victory over MT.

"We were pleased with the maturity the team showed coming back after the match at Louisville," said Mean Green assistant coach Jeff Maren. "We lost the doubles point in a tough way again today, but the squad played with more energy after that to get our singles wins."

In doubles action from the No. 1 position Irina Paraschiv and Madura Ranganathan won their match over Marlene Chemin and Marietta Bigus 8-4. The No. 2 team of Catalina Cruz and Narine Kazarova lost to Natalie Araya and Taylor Coffey 8-5. In a long and strenuous match, Rachel Wilhelm and Amy Joubert were defeated 9-8 (9-7) by Anna Djananova and Alexandra Dachos.

The Mean Green didn't get down though as the unit captured all but one singles match.

Irina Paraschiv took down Andrea Herrera 6-1, 6-2 from the No.1 spot and Madura Ranganathan was victorious against Marietta Bigus 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2. At positions 4-6, Paula Dinuta got the W versus Taylor Coffey 6-4, 6-3, Amy Joubert won 6-1, 6-2 over Alexandra Dachos, and Rachel Wilhelm prevailed 6-4, 6-4 against Marlene Chemin.

North Texas hosts nationally ranked Tulsa (No. 32) and Florida International (No. 48) next weekend at the Waranch Tennis Complex in Denton. The squad will look to win their first matches against ranked opponents this year.
