DENTON, Texas (2/20/09) - The Mean Green tennis team is on the road again this weekend against the No. 73 Louisville Cardinals and the Sun Belt's Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. NT plays the Cards on Saturday at 12 P.M. and the Blue Raiders on Sunday at 11 A.M. Both of these matches will be held at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center in Louisville, KY.
North Texas (6-2) has won four matches in row with victories over Stephen F. Austin, Midwestern State, UT-San Antonio, and Texas State. One of North Texas' players that has been on fire lately is freshman Irina Paraschiv. She is currently ranked No. 14 in the ITA Southwest Region and has posted an 8-0 record in her last eight matches combining singles and doubles. She's teamed with Madura Ranganathan to go 4-0 the past two weekends. Paraschiv and Ranganathan are ranked as the No. 8 doubles team in the region.
The Louisville Cardinals are nationally-ranked at No. 73 and have a deceptive record at 2-6. The Cardinals won their first two matches of the season against Morehead State and No. 70 Michigan State. They have since lost six in a row, but these have all been to ranked teams. Three of the losses have been slim 4-3 decisions to Marquette (No. 75), Iowa (No. 75), and Tulsa (No. 32). North Texas and Louisville have never met before.
Middle Tennessee, a familiar face for the Mean Green in the Sun Belt, comes in 5-1 overall with a 2-0 record in SBC play. The Blue Raiders have wins over Chattanooga, Tennessee Tech, Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, and Tennessee-Martin. Their one loss was a 6-1 decision to Vanderbilt. MT holds a 4-2 edge all-time over North Texas. The last two however have gone the way of the Mean Green. The first was in the SBC Tournament back in 2006 as NT won 4-2. The second happened last year with the Mean Green winning 6-1 in Denton.
