Tennis Team Improves To 6-2 With Win Over Bobcats


SAN MARCOS, Texas (2/15/09) - The Mean Green tennis team capped off a 2-0 weekend with a 5-2 victory over the Texas State Bobcats on Sunday. North Texas has now won four straight matches improving its record to 6-2 this season.

"We seem to be growing with each match," said NT head coach Sujay Lama. "We are definitely learning more about ourselves while winning. These matches were important for us to win because of the tougher schedule ahead." 

The Mean Green won four of the six singles matches and two out of three in doubles.

At the one spot, Irina Paraschiv defeated Andrea Giraldo in decisive fashion 6-1, 6-0. Irina and Madura Ranganathan also won their doubles match against Giraldo and Lainy Chafitz 8-4. 

"I felt in great shape out there today," said Paraschiv. "My positive thinking really helped me during my match and I thought the team showed a lot of energy throughout the day."

There were four other NT victories including Paula Dinuta looking sharp in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Nyssa Peele and Catalina Cruz beating Lainy Chafitz in three sets 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. Amy Joubert defeated Mackenzie Farmer 6-4, 6-0 and Joubert teamed with Rachel Wilhelm for an 8-5 win against Farmer and Kiki Kruse.    

North Texas stays on the road next weekend to face nationally-ranked Louisville and SBC opponent Middle Tennessee.
