Kononova Named C-USA Athlete Of The Week
Sophomore Honored For The Third Time
IRVING — After an undefeated week, which included a win over the No. 16 player in the nation, North Texas tennis sophomore Maria Kononova was named Conference USA’s Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
It is the third time Kononova has been honored with the award.
“Maria is most deserving of this accolade,” said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama. “Her level of play this spring has been impressive. We are happy to see her work coming to fruition.”
On Friday, at the No. 1 spot, Kononova defeated the No. 16 player in the country and top-600 in the world in Oklahoma’s Lily Miyazaki, 6-2, 6-4. It is the highest ITA-ranked opponent a North Texas tennis player has ever beaten.
Kononova then followed up her record setting performance on Saturday by beating Wisconsin’s No. 1, 6-2, 6-3. With the two wins this weekend, Kononova improves to 5-1 at the No. 1 spot this season. She’s won five matches in a row. The 2016 first-team All-C-USA team member won eight matches at No. 1 all of last year.
With the win over OU’s No. 16 ranked player, Kononova improves her career record against the ITA top-125 to 4-1.
Including this fall, Kononova has won 18 singles matches and posted a .818 winning percentage. In October, she became the third Mean Green tennis player under the 11-year North Texas tenured coach to make the singles consolation bracket finals of the ITA Texas Regional. In total, Kononova has won 33 singles matches while at North Texas and is part of one of the most exciting young doubles teams in country.
She and her doubles partner Tamuna Kutubidze are a perfect 5-0 this dual match season and are 15-5 overall, all at No. 1.
Kononova and her Mean Green team return to Waranch this weekend for two matches. Their first match is Friday at 2 p.m. versus Kansas State. North Texas then hosts Washington State on Sunday at noon
