LUBBOCK, Texas (2/10/08) Madura Ranganathan knocked off the first ranked opponent of the season, but No. 70 Nevada proved too tough in a 4-3 win over the North Texas tennis team.
Ranganathan knocked off No. 48 Maria Mizyuk to pick up her fifth straight win with the 7-5, 5-7, 10-7 victory. The win is North Texas’ (3-3) first over a ranked singles opponent since head coach Sujay Lama took over in 2006.
“After taking a step back against Texas Tech on Friday night, I think we made great strides against a really good Nevada squad,” Lama said. “Madura’s win puts her on the map, and will give the entire program some momentum heading into our next match.”
Idalina Franca and Amy Joubert also picked up singles wins, and the doubles team of Rachel Wilhelm and Catalina Cruz jumped to 5-1 this year with a victory.
North Texas returns to action at home on Wednesday versus Texas Christian University. The match is slated to start at 3 p.m. at the Waranch Tennis Pavilion.
