DENTON, Texas (2/5/09) - The Mean Green tennis team begins its spring home slate at the Waranch Tennis Complex this Saturday as Stephen F. Austin and Midwestern State come to Denton. North Texas will square off against SFA at 11 A.M. then face MSU at 4 P.M.
The Mean Green put up a 6-2 home record in '07-08 and looks to start off this season with a 2-0 mark in Denton.
"We are excited to be playing at home finally," said Mean Green head coach Sujay Lama. "We’ve used the last two weeks to get healthy and stronger physically. The ladies have worked very hard on the courts to improve their execution. We want to start building momentum and get back our confidence. There's not a better way to do it than having double header at our place."
The Mean Green's history versus these two opponents has been very strong with a 23-1 combined record all-time against the "Jacks" and Mustangs. Breaking it down, the Mean Green own an 11-1 mark over SFA with the previous meeting last year in Nacogdoches where NT won 7-0. MSU is 0-12 versus North Texas with the last meeting back in the 1986-87 season where the Mustangs lost 7-2.
Stephen F. Austin comes into Saturday's matchup at 1-1 this year beating Louisiana Tech then dropping one to Houston this past weekend. Roxana Enica was named the Southland Conference's Player of the Week for her performance in the two matches. SFA posted an 8-14 overall record last season going 2-8 in conference play.
Midwestern State opens its season against the Mean Green on Saturday. The Mustangs return solid players to the lineup this season which include Faye D'Hamecourt and Cristina Oliveira. D'Hamecourt tallied a 13-4 record last year playing from the No. 3 and 4 positions while Oliveira recorded an 8-9 mark at the top three slots. These two also had a 7-4 record in doubles. MSU finished 10-8 overall and 1-3 in the Lone Star Conference last year.
