DENTON, Texas (2/03/08) The North Texas tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches with a 6-1 victory in its first Sun Belt Conference action versus Middle Tennessee.
The Mean Green (3-1) has started a trend of dominating doubles play that continued versus the Blue Raiders (1-5). NT took all three doubles matches, and has now won each doubles point this year.
North Texas was a tiebreak set away from its third consecutive sweep. North Texas beat both Stephen F. Austin and UT-Arlington 7-0, but snapped that streak when Amy Joubert fell 6-4, 5-7 (7-10) in the sixth spot.
“We talked about playing strong early in doubles, and I think we were able to do that again today,” said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama. “Doing this well in our first conference match really sets a tone.”
Both Narine Kazarova and Idalina Franca improved to 4-0 on the season in singles play, to extend the Mean Green’ team record to 3-1. North Texas has struggled in each of its last two seasons, posting 6-18 and 2-19 records, but is off to one of the best starts in school history.
“It’s really nice to have this start,” Kazarova said. “We are really proving how good we are this year. Getting off to this start really gives me a lot of confidence going into my next match.”
The Mean Green returns to action on Feb. 8 at Texas Tech.
