Tennis Opens Season WIth Loss

DENTON (1/28/2007) - The North Texas tennis team kicked off its season Sunday with a 7-0 loss to UT-San Antonio at the Las Colinas Indoor Facility in Irving, Texas.

"I was very pleased with our effort today,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “We started out nervous because it was our first match but settled down in singles play and got rid of some of the rust. Idalina and Megan played extremely well and were a few points from winning their matches. We are excited to work this week and make improvement in our upcoming matches next weekend."

Senior Megan Schmulbach, who played at No. 1 singles, had a tough match against Karen Scida. She was only able to win a single set (6-3, 4-6, 1-0), and ultimately fell by a tie-breaker in the third set.

Idalina Franca competed hard against Tanya Hastings, but she too was narrowly defeated after three sets including a tie-breaker.

The team is back in action next weekend when they travel to take on Louisiana-Lafayette Feb 2, Southern Mississippi on Feb 3, and Southeast Louisiana on Feb 4.
