DENTON, Texas - The 60th ranked North Texas tennis team will achieve yet another first in program history when it heads to Berkeley, Calif., to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Kick-Off Weekend.
The ITA Kick-Off weekend is considered the first team national championship of the year. Sixty-four teams will compete at 15 different sites around the country in hopes of advancing to the ITA Indoor National Championships, which will be held Feb 18-21 at the Boars Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
"To be one of only 60 teams to qualify for this event is huge for our program," said head coach Sujay Lama. "This will be another first for us and a great experience for our team."
The Mean Green's (1-1) first match has it going toe-to-toe with the No. 9 California Bears at Noon (CT) on Friday.
"Cal Berkley is a powerhouse in college tennis," added Lama. "Just recently they were in the finals of the NCAA National Championships, so this is going to be a great challenge for us. These are the types of matches that you want to play. We are excited and ready to give it all we have and become a better team for having had this opportunity."
The Bears (0-0) will be competing in their first match of the dual season after hosting a tournament last weekend.
The winner of the North Texas vs. Cal matchup will face the winner of No. 40 St. Mary's against No. 51 TCU and the losers of each match will face each other.
St. Mary's (0-0) is also playing its first matches of the dual match season, while the Horned Frogs of TCU defeated UTPA 7-0 in its first match of the season.
The team that comes up with two victories this weekend will advance to the 2011 ITA Indoor National Championships.
