Mean Green Host First Home Match Of 2018
North Texas Faces LA Tech On Saturday At Noon
DENTON — It’s been 279 days since the Mean Green tennis team last played a meaningful match at the Waranch Tennis Complex. Saturday, they return to the courts to host their first home match of the 2018 season as they welcome Louisiana Tech for a noon start.
The Mean Green (1-1) opened the season in Florida facing two competitive opponents in USF and UCF. UNT began with a 4-3 win over the Bulls and battled with Central Florida, who had recently beat No. 15 South Carolina, but fell 4-1.
Despite the loss, North Texas is feeling pretty good about the team moving forward in the young season and with each match and practice the team’s ambition is increasing.
“Our team is feeling very confident,” said freshman Nidhi Surapaneni. “Everyone has been working very hard and I’m sure it will pay off. We’re trying to reach higher expectations.”
Expectations at home for the Mean Green are always to dominate. Protecting home court has always been an importance to head coach Sujay Lama and is something he’s been very successful at ever since he arrived in Denton 12 seasons ago.
Since Lama took over the Mean Green, the program has had a winning record at home nine different years.
“I’m very excited to play at home and in front of our fans,” Surapaneni said.
The Mean Green are featuring a bolstering lineup that Lama is very excited about. Surapaneni and fellow freshman Sille Tranberg have added depth to the roster and have been successful early in their collegiate careers.
In the fall, Surapaneni went 8-4 while Tranberg went 4-2.
North Texas will face LA Tech on Saturday riding a five-match winning streak against them. Saturday will be LA Tech’s first dual match of the 2018 season.
The Mean Green’s mindset headed into the match is they want to make sure they stay on the attack until the final point is recorded.
“The match isn’t over until the final point,” Surapaneni said. “We took that away from last weekend’s matches and we can improve on it Saturday.”
Improving on doubles results was also a major point of emphasis this week in practice. The Mean Green had success last weekend in singles but failed to win a doubles match and thus dropped both doubles point.
