NORMAN, Okla. — It may still be January and it may still be cold, but that is not too early for the North Texas tennis team. The Mean Green being the spring portion of their 2014-15 season January 20 when they travel to Norman, Oklahoma, to take on the No. 24 Sooners. Play is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Wadley Indoor Pavilion.

Since the 2009-10 season, the Mean Green has visited Oklahoma three times and is 0-3 with two of the scores being 7-0 sweeps. This time around, however, head coach Sujay Lama is confident that the result will be different.

"We are looking forward to getting our season started against a very good OU team," he said. "We have had a a good week of practice and this is an opportunity to see where we stand early in the season."

It will be the second time this season North Texas will travel to Norman, the first being for the OU Invitational September 19-21, 2014. In that tournament, three Mean Green players faced off Sooners; sophomore Ana Sofia Cordero defeated freshman Brooke Withrow 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, junior Agustina Valenzuela defeated junior Emma Devine 6-2, 7-5 and sophomore Alexis Thoma lost to senior Abbi Melrose 6-2, 6-2.

The Mean Green is led into the season by two extraordinary seniors, Kseniya Bardabush and Franziska Sprinkmeyer, two players who have been through a lot of ups and downs at North Texas.

The ups being two Sun Belt Conference championships - in 2012 and 2013 - and the down being struggling through injuries. Bardabush and Sprinkmeyer battled through tough injuries in the fall and are expected to play against Oklahoma.
