Mean Green Prepare For Dual Match Season With Metroplex Mania

Jan. 13, 2017

DALLAS -- North Texas women's tennis has its final tune up match before the spring dual season begins.

Starting Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and going through Monday, the Mean Green will compete at SMU in the Mustangs' Metroplex Mania at the SMU Tennis Complex, Turpin Stadium and Brookshire Family Pavilion at 5669 N Central Expy, Dallas, TX 75205.

The Metroplex Mania is the final competition for North Texas before it heads to No. 5 Oklahoma State on Jan. 21 to open the 2017 dual match season.

"We had a great week of practice and team building activities," said head coach Sujay Lama. "We are excited to play some matches this weekend to get back in the flow of things and get ready for the dual matches. It should give us a good idea where we are and the things that we will need to clean up before our first dual match."

This season's North Texas team is one of the youngest but also one of the most talented teams Lama has had since he came to Denton in 2006. The Mean Green's doubles team of Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze was recently ranked No. 54 in the country by the ITA.

North Texas' spring schedule is rigorous and includes top-5 Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arizona and many more. This weekend's matches will be the final opportunity for the three Mean Green freshmen to get experience against tough opponents; similar to whom they will face in the coming season. At the SMU Metroplex Mania, North Texas matches up against the Mustangs, BYU and conference foe Rice over the three-day hidden duel format tournament.

This weekend's results count for individual records but not for the team.
