Tennis Will Begin Spring Season Ranked No. 66 in ITA
Galieva Cracks Top 125 Nationally in Singles Rankings
Just as donning the No. 66 made for a great career for NHL legend Mario Lemieux, the North Texas women's tennis team hopes a preseason ranking of No. 66 will make for a magnificent season. The Mean Green begins 2015 with the same ITA College Tennis ranking it had at the end of 2014, and with seven of eight letterwinners returning, expectations are quite high.
"To consistently ranked nationally in the preseason and season-ending ranknigs shows that we have a program that's stable and growing," head coach Sujay Lama said upon the release of the rankings January 6. "Our goal now is to take that next step."
In addition, junior Kamilla Galieva begins the season ranked No. 113 in women's singles. She finished the fall with a 4-4 singles record, which included big regional wins over Elizabeth Thoms of UT Arlington and Sofiko Kadzhaya in the Racquet Club Invitational.
"Kamilla is one of the hardest-working student-athletes we have," Lama praised. "She had a great fall and this ranking is well-earned. This should give her a lot of confidence heading into our matches this spring."
Galieva's ranking of No. 113 ranks fourth among Conference USA players and 14th within the state of Texas. The team ranking of No. 66 is second in Conference USA - behind No. 21 Rice - and eighth within the state of Texas.
With this news, the Mean Green prepare for the first action of the new year in less than two weeks, a dual meet against the Oklahoma Sooners January 20. It will be the second time this season North Texas will travel to Norman, the first being for the OU Invitational September 19-21, 2014.
