Complete ITA Southwest Regional Rankings
DENTON, Texas (1/06/09) - Freshman Irina Paraschiv and sophomore Madura Ranganathan of the North Texas tennis team earned top 10 doubles and top 20 singles preseason rankings in the ITA Southwest Region on Tuesday. The pair are highly ranked at No. 8 in doubles and in singles Paraschiv is No. 14 and Ranganathan is No. 16.
“It’s great to have two players from our team ranked in the top 20 in our region as well as a doubles team ranked amongst the top 8," said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama. "It says a lot about how our program continues to grow and get better every day. This recognition will motivate Irina and Madura to work hard to maximize their potential.”
Paraschiv and Ranganathan formed one of the best doubles teams in the fall of 2008, advancing to the quarterfinals of the ITA Regionals. During the regionals, the duo picked up wins over Houston, No. 10 Baylor, and No. 8 Texas A&M.
In singles, Paraschiv stepped into the No. 1 position in the fall of 2008 and produced great results. The Romania native recorded 11 wins and played step-for-step with one of the country's best players in Megan Falcon of LSU.
Ranganathan won nine matches including a singles title at the Rice Classic this past fall. She also finished the '08 season with a No. 30 ITA ranking in the Southwest Region.
As a team, the Mean Green posted a 13-9 record last season earning a No. 13 final ranking in the region.
The squad begins workouts tomorrow and will open the season at Sun Belt foe New Orleans on January 17.
