North Texas Picks Up Six Wins On Day One Of SDSU Invite

SAN DIEGO -- North Texas won six matches Friday in the quarterfinals of the San Diego State Invite. 

The Mean Green won two doubles matches and four singles matches at the round robin tournament.

Despite never playing a doubles match together, sophomore Maria Kononova and freshman Alexandra Heczey defeated Kansas State's Ana Garcia Navas and Millie Stretton in a close match (7-6) (7). 

Kononova also won her singles match against Constance Branstine (6-1, 1-6, 6-3), a Texas A&M signee. Kononova has now won five of her last six singles matches. The win advances her to the semifinals of the Red bracket of where she will face off against Paris Corley of Arizona on Saturday.

Also picking up a win Friday was freshman Haruka Sasaki, who defeated UC Irvine's Hali Dickerson in straight sets (6-4, 6-1). The win was her second consecutive and now have won four of her last six. Sasaki faces Livia Cirnu of Kansas State in the semifinals of the Silver draw bracket. Sasaki defeated Cirnu in three sets a month ago at the OU Invite. 

The strong start to the SDSU Invite comes on the heels of an impressive showing in the ITA Texas Regional where North Texas won 60 percent of its matches, winning 20 total. Kononova made the consolation singles finals of the tournament.
