DENTON — Even though she lost the first set of her final singles match, junior Agustina Valenzuela fought back for a three-set victory to win the Silver draw at the Wild West Shootout. Valenzuela defeated Air Force sophomore Chloe Forlini by a score of 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7) as she was the only North Texas player to top her bracket.

After losing only four games in her first two singles matches, Valenzuela had trouble dealing with the playing style of her opponent. But she made an adjustment and buckled down to pull out the win.

“Her tennis was very hard for me to play because of her slice that she used all the time,” Valenzuela explained. “I think I won because of my fitness; I had to run a lot because her slice and drop shots were very good.”

Head coach Sujay Lama was very impressed with Valenzuela’s composure during the tournament.

“It was great to see Agustina come back from a set down and win her flight,” he said. “She has played at a high level all fall but has had difficulty closing out matches; her performance this weekend should give her a lot of confidence.”

Going into play on Sunday morning, North Texas tennis had three opportunities to win draws at the Wild West Shootout.

In the White doubles draw final, Valenzuela and sophomore Ana Sofia Cordero lost to a UT Arlington duo of sophomore Jessica Birowski and freshman Augustina Serio by a score of 8-4. Then in the White draw final, sophomore Alexis Thoma fell 6-4, 6-3 to sophomore Astrid Gehre of UT Arlington.

“Even though our team had some losses, everybody fought until the end and never gave up,” Valenzuela said. “I felt very good and confident when I heard everybody cheering for each other.”

In other singles play, Cordero won the Black back draw with a marathon 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (9) victory over sophomore Tracy Landram of Air Force. In the Green draw, senior Kseniya Bardabush won her first match of the fall, defeating Air Force junior Mary Meyers by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Bardabush and Thoma teamed up to win the Green doubles back draw, as they notched an 8-4 win over sophomore Lily Forlini and senior Tiffany Tran of Air Force.

Now as the Mean Green heads into a long winter break, Lama is happy with how his team played and is looking forward to improving before dual matches begin in the spring.

“One of the strengths of this team is the work ethic and commitment the girls have to improving their game,” Lama praised. “There is also a healthy competition that propels them to get better each day. We have our work cut out for us, but I feel very good about where we are headed.”
