Mean Green Finish ITA Texas Regional With 20 Wins
North Texas Reaches Doubles Semifinals And Singles Consolation Bracket Finals
WACO — North Texas leaves the ITA Texas Regional at Baylor with one of the best winning percentages in the tournament. The Mean Green won a combined 20 matches — 14 singles and six doubles.
Sophomores Tamuna Kutubidze and Maria Kononova were just the second North Texas doubles team in program history to reach the ITA regional semifinal round. Additionally, Kononova became the third Mean Green tennis player under the 11-year tenured head coach Sujay Lama to make the singles consolation bracket finals. In total, the Mean Green had a .636 winning percentage in singles and a .600 percentage in doubles.
Monday, Kononova lost to Texas A&M’s Marcarena Olivares (6-3, 6-3). The only other North Texas tennis players to reach the finals were Paula Dinuta in 2010 and Kseniya Bardabush in 2012. They both won the title.
“It was a good week for me,” Kononova said. “I stayed until the last day of playing and had a chance to play plenty of matches.”
So far this fall, Kononova has won eight singles matches. She’s won 23 for her career, including the 2016 spring.
Kononova also had success in the doubles bracket. She and her partner, Kutubidze, were seeded No. 8 and given a first round bye. The duo won their first three matches before losing Sunday in the semifinals to the eventual champions. In 2009, Madura Ranganathan and Irina Paraschiv became the first North Texas doubles team to reach the semifinals. Two weeks ago, Kononova and Kutubidze defeated the No. 36 ranked national doubles team from Oklahoma State.
“I figured out some things I should keep working on to improve my results in the near future,” Kononova said. “It’s a great experience for me and I can’t wait for my next tournament."
North Texas has three weeks off before they travel to San Diego for the San Diego State Invite. It'll be its second to last fall tournament. The spring season begins January 21 at Oklahoma State.
