Kononova And Kutubidze Advance To ITA Texas Regional Quarterfinals
Sophomores Win Twice On Friday
WACO -- North Texas sophomores Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Texas Regional Friday afternoon with an 8-2 win over Texas A&M's Tina Bokhua and Macarena Olivares.
The No. 8 seeded Mean Green pair will match up against Texas Tech's Katelyn Jackson and Reagan Collins Saturday morning at the Baylor hosted tournament.
As the No. 8 seeded pair, Kononova and Kutubidze were given a first round bye and opened the tournament in the Round of 32 against Abilene Christian's Autumn Crossnoe and Jordan Henry Friday morning. Kononova and Kutubidze won their morning match 8-2 and then defeated the Aggie pair later in the day. Last year as freshmen, Kononova and Kutubidze only won one doubles match in the ITA Texas Regional.
Sophomore Laura Arciniegas and freshman Haruka Sasaki lost in a heartbreaker Friday. The North Texas pair squandered three match points and lost in a tiebreaker to Texas' No. 6 seeded Petra Granic and Dani Wagland 8-7.
Senior Alexis Thoma and freshman Ivana Babic dropped their second round doubles match (8-6) to the No. 2 seeded Gabriela Talaba and Alexandra Valenstein of Texas Tech. Thoma had won her opening two singles matches but lost Friday in the Round of 32 to Texas Arlington's Agustina Serio in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-3)
In the consolation singles bracket, Kononova and freshman Alexandra Heczey won two matches each to advance to the fourth round. Kononova beat Vanessa Phan of Baylor (6-0, 6-2) to advance to the fourth round, while Heczey knocked off Caitlyn Mitchell (6-0, 6-2) of Sam Houston State in the third round. Kononova and Heczey will play at 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
