WACO — After two long days at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships at Baylor, the North Texas tennis team has been knocked out by a strong field from the Lone Star State. Sophomore Ana Sofia Cordero highlighted the Mean Green’s play with a 7-5, 3-6, 10-6 victory over senior Verena Scott of UT Arlington in the consolation singles bracket.

But unfortunately that was it in the win column for the team on Saturday, as Cordero and the other three North Texas players in competition each dropped their last match of the day.

“We did not get the results we had hoped for, but the experience we got is invaluable in our development,” head coach Sujay Lama said.

Also in consolation singles, sophomore Alexis Thoma fell to Abilene Christian junior Nada Marjanovic by a score of 7-6 (4), 6-4, while junior Agustina Valenzuela lost a three-set, 6-0, 1-6, 10-8 match to sophomore Ana Laura Gutierrez of Texas St. Then, Cordero lost a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6 heartbreaker to senior Brittney Reed of Abilene Christian.

Perhaps the most anticipated match for the Mean Green was junior Anastasiya Shestakova going up against No. 10 seed senior Natalie Beazant of Rice in the Round of 32 singles bracket. However, Beazant took care of Shestakova in two straight sets by a score of 6-0, 6-4.

In doubles play, Cordero and Valenzuela fell 8-5 to the No. 6 seed Texas Tech duo of freshman Sarah Dvorak and sophomore Lynn Kiro. To wrap up the day, Shestakova and Thoma lost to the Texas duo of junior Lana Groenvynck and sophomore Neda Koprcina by the slim margin of 8-6.

Upon its return to Denton, the team will focus on its own tournament - the Wild West Shootout - that takes place from October 31-November 2 at the Waranch Tennis Complex. Lama expects all seven North Texas players to be healthy by then, and also expects his team to get after it on their home courts.

"Our focus is now on finishing strong for the fall season and having a great tournament at home,” he explained.
