Shestakova Advances to Round of 32 in USTA/ITA Texas Regionals
Junior Now Faces Difficult Task Against No. 10 Seed Beazant of Rice
WACO — On Day 1 of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships at Baylor, Anastasiya Shestakova rose to the occasion and advanced to the Round of 32 in the singles bracket. The junior from Sevastopol, Crimea won in the first round via walkover, then came face to face with senior Christine Foote of UT Arlington.
Shestakova eliminated Foote with a convincing 6-0, 6-3 victory, and now will face No. 10 seed senior Natalie Beazant of Rice on Friday. Beazant - who defeated Mean Green junior Kamilla Galieva 8-5 at the Racquet Club Invitational on September 13 - has been one of the top players in the region for a few years now, but Shestakova is playing some of the best tennis of her career at North Texas.
That match begins at 10:15 a.m.
In other singles play, sophomore Ana Sofia Cordero lost to sophomore Seda Arantekin of TCU by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Also, junior Agustina Valenzuela fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 against UT Arlington sophomore Angeles de los Rios.
Sophomore Alexis Thoma received a bye in the first round, but freshman Fabienne Gettwart of Sam Houston knocked her out in the Round of 64 by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Head coach Sujay Lama was happy by his team’s play across the board, but noted that a few key points here and there could have made for better results.
“We had great effort today but our execution in critical moments cost us in singles play,” he noted. “We will learn from them and improve tomorrow.”
In doubles play, Cordero and Valenzuela teamed up to down junior Anna Mamalat and sophomore Mason Strickland of Texas A&M by a score of 8-3. The other duo of Shestakova and Thoma lost an 8-5 decision to TCU’s redshirt sophomore Sofiko Kadzhaya and senior Simona Parajova.
On Day 2, Cordero and Valenzuela match up with the No. 6 seeded team of freshman Sarah Dvorak and sophomore Lynn Kiro of Texas Tech at 9:00 a.m.
In singles consolation play on Friday, Thoma goes up against Abilene Christian junior Nada Marjanovic, while Cordero will play senior Verena Scott of UT Arlington, with the winner set to face Abilene Christian senior Brittney Reed. Valenzuela will wait for the winner of Texas junior Lana Groenvynck and sophomore Ana Laura Gutierrez of Texas St.
