FORT WORTH -- The North Texas tennis team has reached the semifinals of both the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Texas Regional doubles and singles draw.

Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze defeated Baylor's doubles team in a tiebreak Sunday morning, 8-7(5). It is the second consecutive year the No. 22 nationally ranked doubles team has reached the semifinal round. They beat a Baylor team last year in the semifinals too.

They are only the second Mean Green doubles team to ever make to the semifinals.

Later in the afternoon, Kononova became the first North Texas tennis player to advance to the singles draw semifinals when she defeated TCU's Meredith Roberts 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

"Today was all about grit and determination," said Mean Green head coach Sujay Lama. "We found ways to get it done through tough weather conditions and difficult moments in the match. Tamuna and Maria exhibited maturity and now have a great opportunity in front of them."

That opportunity is a chance to reach the fall season's most important tournament's regional championship round, something no one in program-history has done. Furthermore, it sets them up for an opportunity to qualify for the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships that will run from Nov. 1-5 in Indian Wells, Calif.

"Today was more about experience and staying calm," Kutubidze said. "We went to the semifinals last year. This year, we are going to try 10 times harder to do better. We're hungry."

The tournament's No. 1 seeded doubles team will a face a Longhorns doubles team that is seeded No. 8 in the tournament and defeated the No. 3-seed Texas Tech team to reach the semifinals.

Kononova and Kutubidze have won in tiebreak fashion in their last two matches. The doubles match is scheduled to begin at 12:30 pm from TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

The No. 3 seeded singles player, Kononova, will face the top-seed Bianca Turati of Texas at 10:30 am. Turati is the No. 24 nationally ranked player. Kononova is No. 41.

TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center is located at 3609 Bellaire Dr N, Fort Worth, TX 76129.
