Kutubidze And Kononova Take Down No. 36 Oklahoma State Team
Mean Green Sophomores Win 8-7(7-4)
PACIFIC PALISADES, California – North Texas sophomores Tamuna Kutubidze and Maria Kononova defeated ITA No. 36 ranked doubles team Viktoriya Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari of Oklahoma State Wednesday 8-7(7-4) at the ITA All-American Championship consolation bracket.
It is the highest ranking doubles team the pair has defeated and the second ranked opponent they’ve beaten overall. As freshmen, Kutubidze and Kononova defeated No. 48 Emily Smith and Katherine Ip of Rice (6-3).
“Today was a great day for us,” Kutubidze said. “We played amazing doubles. Our opponents are really good but today we were even better than them. We could understand each other, feel the ball amazingly well and we had fun. When we have fun on the court we always do great and today was that kind of day.”
“No one could beat us,” she added.
The Mean Green’s doubles team reached the All-American qualification round before losing Tuesday to Oregon’s Alyssa Tobita and Shweta Sangwan (8-5). Kutubidze and Kononova were guaranteed one consolation game Wednesday and made the most of it.
Since arriving in Denton last school year, Kutubidze and Kononova have built a dynamic pair. The doubles team has won now 24 total doubles matches, 10 of which were dual matches in the spring. They have won nine of their last 12 doubles matches.
“I’m proud of us,” Kutubidze said. “Beating a ranked team has given us a lot of confidence.”
