Freshmen Finish Strong At OU Invite
Sasaki And Heczey Win On Final Day
NORMAN, Oklahoma - North Texas freshmen Haruka Sasaki and Alexandra Heczey finished the final day of the Oklahoma Invite with a victory each.
On Sunday in the consolation bracket of the singles tournament, Sasaki and Heczey defeated their respected opponent in straight sets. The two Mean Green freshmen have shown growth over the past three days of the tournament and their fight was on display with the two late tournament victories.
Sasaki beat the Sooners' Brooke Withrow (6-3, 7-5) while Heczey defeated Kansas State's Livia Cirnu (6-4, 6-2).
Heczey has now won her last two singles. Both matches were victories over Kansas State opponents and in straight sets. Heczey beat the Wildcats' Iva Bago (6-3, 6-4) on Saturday.
Sasaki has won two of her last three matches and defeated Kansas State's Cirnu on Saturday (2-6, 6-4, 6-1). After defeating Withrow Saturday morning she lost to Texas Tech's Reagan Collins (4-6, 7-5, 6-2).
Also competing Sunday was four other Mean Green tennis players. Fellow freshman Ivana Babic lost (6-0, 6-4) to Oklahoma's Malene Stripp and sophomore Laura Arciniegas lost to Tanaporn Thongsing of Wichita State (7-6(6), 6-1). Arciniegas' classmate, Minying Liang lost to Tulsa's Vera Ploner (7-6(2), 6-3) and senior Alexis Thoma dropped her singles match to Lynn Kiro of Texas Tech (6-0, 3-6, 6-4).
Sophmores Tamuna Kutubidze and Maria Kononova will begin their ITA All-American doubles tournament on Tuesday.
