North Texas Wins 11 Matches
DENTON — The North Texas tennis team won 11 matches on the day in two separate tournaments.
They will play Arkansas in the finals on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
“It’s nice to play with Tamuna again after such a long break,” Kononova said. “We’re excited to take part in the last day of the tournament. We are looking forward to our match.”
At the Rice Invitational in Houston, the Mean Green went 5-0 in singles and 5-1 in doubles. Freshman Nidhi Surapaneni continued her hot start with another singles win. Surapaneni defeated UT- San Antonio’s Sonia Madronal 6-2, 6-0. She will play Sam Houston State’s Mila Milaonvic in her flight’s finals.
Also reaching her flight’s single final was Ivana Babic. The Mean Green sophomore beat UTSA’s Diya Menon 6-2, 6-2. She will face UT-Arlington’s Lucia Natal in the flight final.
“I’ve gotten mentally stronger and that is something I’m definitely most proud of,” Babic said. “I have been working super hard this semester and past year. My overall game has definitely improved, especially my serves and tactics, which helped me today.”
Fellow sophomore Haruka Sasaki remained undefeated this fall after she beat Kansas’ Carla Pons Martorell 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. In doubles, Sasaki was part of a mix pair and was grouped with a player from Kansas. The two won their flight doubles final.
Minying Liang and Surapaneni won their flight’s final too with a 7-5 win over SMU’s Perez-Lopez/Anselmo.
