DENTON, Texas -The North Texas tennis team fell to Denver after a strong doubles performance by sophomores Danè Joubert and Agustina Valenzuela who secured the first point, Sunday afternoon at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
“This was a tough one that we let slip from us,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “There were many opportunities for us to close the deal and we just did not get it done. Hats off to Denver, they were down and out yet came back and fought tough to secure the win.”
The Mean Green lost to the Pioneers 4-3 after an exhilarating performance.
In doubles play, the duo of Alexis Thoma and Kamilla Galieva were the first to finish at the No. 2 spot, with a quick 8-3 victory. Denver took the No. 1 doubles spot with an 8-6 win over Ksenyia Bardabush and Anastasiya Shetakova. The deciding doubles point went into a tie breaker, at the No.3 spot, where Joubert and Valenzuela pulled through with a 8-7 (9-7) win.
In singles play, Thoma kept the lead for the Mean Green, winning 6-4, 6-1 against Denver’s Evy Van Genechten. The next win for North Texas came from Shestarkova at the No. 2 spot, who battled it out 6-2, 6-1.
