SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- In collegiate tennis, sometimes winning the doubles point does not make a difference - like in North Texas' 4-1 win over San Diego on March 7, when the Mean Green rattled off four consecutive singles wins after going down 1-0 to the Toreros. But sometimes it makes all the difference - like in North Texas' 4-3 loss to No. 58 San Diego St. on Sunday afternoon, when the Mean Green and Aztecs split the six singles matches after the home squad clinched the opening point.

"We didn't capitalize on the opportunities in doubles and that ended up being costly," head coach Sujay Lama said.

After North Texas and San Diego St. split the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches, the usually-dependable No. 3 pairing of Ana Sofia Cordero and Agustina Valenzuela fell to Kennedy Davis and Dora Somoracz in a tense 7-5 matchup. With the win, the Aztecs jumped out to a 1-0 lead overall and the Cordero-Valenzuela duo dropped to a team-best 7-5 so far this season.

For the third straight match, Kseniya Bardabush won at No. 1 singles, this time over Kristin Bush in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (1); she improved to 4-6 so far this season. But in the process of that victory, San Diego St. won three other singles matches to clinch the team win. The finishing point came from Hailey Johnson at the No. 5 position, as she defeated Franziska Sprinkmeyer in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.

"We are playing at a high level but we have to get better at finishing," Lama explained. "We will get the breaks if we continue to stay the course."

After Sprinkmeyer lost, two Mean Green players picked up wins to make the final score 4-3. Anastasiya Shestakova won her second-consecutive match since being moved up to No. 2 singles, a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win against Tami Nguyen, then Kamilla Galieva outlasted Jana Buth at No. 4 singles by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

North Texas will now have 11 days until its next match, an away contest at UTSA on March 20.
