Mean Green Drop Close Match To Old Dominion
North Texas Loses Fourth 4-3 Match Of The Year
DENTON — The North Texas tennis team lost 4-3 Friday afternoon to Conference USA foe Old Dominion.
After a comeback victory in doubles, the Mean Green carried momentum over to singles, winning two of the first three singles matches. However, they couldn’t finish the deal as they lost the final three singles matches. The clinching match came on No. 4.
“It was an amazing come from behind win in doubles. I think it was one of the best we’ve ever had,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “The momentum was in our favor going into singles. But again, the one thing we havn’t done well this year is finishing when we have our opponents on the ropes.”
“It’s a sign of a little inexperience,” Lama later added.
Seven of North Texas’ eight women are sophomores or freshmen.
An underclassman who is gaining incredible experience at No. 1 every match is sophomore Maria Kononova.
The No. 74 ITA ranked player ended her nine match-winning streak Friday in an emotional back-and-forth duel. Kononova lost to the Monarch’s Borislava Botusharova 1-6, 7-6(8-6), 6-3. Botusharova is the No. 112 ranked ITA player.
Senior Alexis Thoma kept her hot streak going Friday as she continues to play like the veteran she is. Thoma won 6-2, 6-0 Friday. It’s her fourth straight singles match victory, which is the longest streak of her career in both spring dual matches and fall season matches.
Friday at doubles, Thoma and her partner Alexandra Heczey fueled the Mean Green’s early momentum with a tough 7-6(5) comeback win at No.2. The win came after North Texas dropped what could have been the clinching doubles point match at No. 3.
At the No. 1 doubles spot, sophomore Tamuna Kutubidze and Kononova improved to 8-0 this season as they made quick work of Old Dominion’s No. 1, 6-0. It’s the pair’s third shutout win this season.
