Tennis Dominates South Alabama, Notches First Conference Victory
MOBILE, Ala. - Mean Green tennis notched its first Sun Belt Conference victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating South Alabama on the road 7-0.
North Texas (5-3) lost only two sets on its way to the victory.
"Today, we played the way we are capable of playing," head coach Sujay Lama said. "We were relaxed but focused and going for our shots on all the courts."
The standout doubles team of Catalina Cruz and Barbora Vykydalova shined again Sunday. The duo took down South Alabama's Marie Bora and Jess Courtnell 8-4 to capture the doubles point for the Mean Green.
In Singles, junior Madura Ranganathan was featured in the No. 1 spot for the first time this spring. Ranganathan battled the Jaguars Katie Welch in the first set, winning 7-5, before quickly disposing her in the second 6-0.
Vykydalova played from the No. 3 spot for the first time in her career. Facing off with Chane Hines, the North Texas freshman cruised through her match, winning 6-4, 6-2.
"Now the key is to bottle this up and bring it on every single match," Lama added. " If we find that consistency, we are going to be a tough out."
The Mean Green will take a week off before heading to Tulsa, Okla., to take on the Golden Hurricane of Tulsa and Big 12 member Kansas State.
