DENTON, Texas -The North Texas tennis team won 4-1 against the Miami University Redhawks, winning their first home match of the season.
“We had a great start in today’s match with doubles,” said North Texas associate head coach Jeff Hammond. “Technically they’ve looked as good as I’ve seen in practice. What we accomplished in singles was the fight we talk about all the time. We went up against a team who when we gave push they pushed back, it was a real battle. “
The Mean Green swept doubles play with sophomores Dane Joubert and Agustina Valenzuela, who defeated the RedHawks No. 3 duo 8-3. Freshman Alexis Thoma and Kamilla galieva won 8-1, earning doubles points for North Texas.
In singles play, Kseniya Bardabush was back from an injury and defeated her opponent at the No. 1 spot (6-4, 6-0), finishing first for the Mean Green. Agustina Valenzula kept that momentum going by taking her No. 5 spot, 6-4, 6-4. Anastasiya Shestakova clinched the match for the Mean Green 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.
“I was really excited to play,” said junior captain Kseniya Bardabush. “I was worried about my ankle but stayed focused on every point and it went well. It was amazing to play at home and have all the support from our Mean Green family.”
North Texas heads to Tulsa, Okla. for a weekend dual against Conference USA foe Tulsa Feb. 21, and Kansas State Feb.22.
