Tennis Loses to Lady Demons in 4-3 Result
Cordero and Valenzuela Continue Doubles Tear
DENTON — The North Texas tennis team fell to Northwestern St. on Saturday afternoon, 4-3. After losing the doubles point to the Lady Demons, the Mean Green split the final six singles matches, but it was not enough to complete the comeback.
"We rallied but didn't pull it out at the end," head coach Sujay Lama said. "We got a little passive and that was costly."
The No. 3 doubles pair of Ana Sofia Cordero and Agustina Valenzuela continued its strong play against Polina Ivanova and Emily Kerr, as they won 6-2. That was the only doubles win for North Texas, however, as the other two pairs won only three games combined. And with those results led to a doubles point for Northwestern St.
In singles, it was a similar situation to the Mean Green's last match against No. 49 Harvard. Following some early wins, it was up to Alexis Thoma to bring North Texas back from a 3-2 deficit and she came through. Thomas defeated Barbora Kollarova 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 and once again it all came down to a final result.
With regular No. 1 Kseniya Bardabush not available for singles play, Anastasiya Shestakova slid up to that spot and went up against Tatiana Larina. Shestakova took it to three sets before falling 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 to give the Lady Demons a slim victory.
Other singles wins for the Mean Green included a 6-2, 6-1 victory by Franziska Sprinkmeyer and a 6-3, 6-0 finish from Valenzuela for an undefeated day. Following a week break, North Texas will travel to Kentucky for a matchup with No. 66 Louisville on February 22 at 1 p.m.
"We will get back to work and focus on fundamentals and getting lots of reps," Lama explained. "There's no easy way, we have to stay mentally tough and keep working."
