ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The North Texas tennis team came home empty-handed this weekend after a 4-0 loss to New Mexico February 1 at the Linda Estes Tennis Center. Following a narrow 4-3 loss to Nevada January 31, the team once again found itself in positions to win many of the matches throughout the day, but was unable to close them out.

"This was another tough loss, but we are learning and growing," head coach Sujay Lama said. "We put ourselves in winning positions in both singles and doubles but couldn't finish."

A crucial moment happened early in the day, when the Mean Green lost a tiebreak in the deciding doubles face-off and just missed out on claiming the doubles point for the third consecutive match. With each team claiming one doubles victory, the Lobo duo of Meredith Hopson and Emily Olivier edged Anastasiya Shestakova and Alexis Thoma by a score of 7-6 (6); so instead of jumping out to a 1-0 lead, North Texas fell behind 1-0.

This was only minutes after North Texas doubles team of Ana Sofia Cordero and Agustina Valenzuela defeated Rachana Bhat and Sharon Coone by the same score, 7-6 (6), to even up the doubles results.

In singles play, Thoma and Kseniya Bardabush lost in straight sets, while Valenzuela fell in three sets to Coone by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. The third singles loss was the clincher, and the other three matches went unfinished while tied 1-1 apiece in sets.

Of course the Mean Green did not expect to be 1-5 at this point in the season, but a plethora of difficult opponents has a lot to do with the record. Instead of making excuses, the team knows it has to work though these tough times and quickly get in gear.

"Adversity is part of life and sports. We know what we are capable of doing, now it's about how we respond," Lama preached. "I feel for our team because they're so close to making a run and doing everything right. We will clean up and get ready for the East Coast this upcoming week."

Up next for North Texas is a trip to Boston for back-to-back matches against the Terriers and the Harvard Crimson. The Mean Green face off against Boston February 7 at 12:00 p.m. and Harvard February 8 at 10:00 a.m.
